7. Inspect Safety Features

This is the step that separates careful operators from careless ones. Chainsaw safety features exist because the consequences of them failing are severe, and they need to be checked regularly to confirm they’re functioning correctly.

  • Chain brake test: With the saw running at idle, hold it firmly and quickly push the front hand guard forward as if activating the brake. The chain should stop immediately and completely. If the chain continues rotating after the brake is activated, the brake needs inspection and repair before the saw is used again
